Portia Manning is approached by a distraught young woman who claims she is afraid she will commit murder. Portia can coax few details from Liza Paradine, but advises her that she needs a psychiatrist.

When Liza’s sister-in-law Josephine is murdered the police suspect Liza, and despite admitting to injuring Josephine, Liza claims she fled the scene in horror of her actions.

Portia decides to do some investigating of her own before considering whether or not she will defend Liza.
